How to Serve with Purpose & Use Your Gifts in the Church
You’re sitting in church on a Sunday morning. The worship is moving, the message is hitting, and you feel that quiet pull on your heart that says, “I want to do more than just attend.” But then comes the question that stops a lot of people in their tracks. Where do I even start?
It’s a really common feeling. So many people want to make a difference in their church and community, but have no idea what they’re actually meant to be doing. The Bible says every believer has been given spiritual gifts to serve others (1 Corinthians 12:7), which means you have something valuable to offer, too. The challenge is figuring out what it is and how to use it.
This blog is here to help you do exactly that. We’ll walk through how to discover your gifts, develop them, and put them into action. And if you’re part of our church community in Kawana, we’d love to help you take that next step.
What Are Spiritual Gifts?
Spiritual gifts are God-given abilities that He places in every believer for the purpose of serving others and building up the church. They’re different from natural talents. Natural talents are skills you might be born with or develop over time, while spiritual gifts come directly from the Holy Spirit and are designed to glorify God and bless His people.
The Bible talks about spiritual gifts in a few key places: 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, and Ephesians 4. Each describes different gifts and how they function within the body of Christ.
The nine gifts of the Spirit listed in 1 Corinthians 12 include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues. Other passages add gifts like teaching, leadership, service, mercy, encouragement, giving, and hospitality.
A really important thing to remember is that gifts aren’t given for personal status. They’re given for the common good. As a Pentecostal church, we believe these gifts are still active today, just as much as they were in the early church.
Why Your Gifts Matter
In 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, Paul uses the human body as a picture of the church. He talks about how every part of the body has a purpose, and no part is more important than another. The hand isn’t more important than the foot. The eye isn’t more important than the ear. They all work together.
Your gifts matter because the body of Christ isn’t complete without you. Every member is essential. No gift is “lesser.” When you start using what God has placed in you, two things happen. You find a deep sense of personal fulfilment, and the church becomes healthier and more effective.
We’ve watched people in our church discover their gift and absolutely come alive in it. Someone with a gift of hospitality joins the welcome team, and suddenly, they’re the reason visitors feel safe enough to come back. Someone with a heart for kids steps into the kids’ ministry, shaping the faith of the next generation. That’s what happens when gifts get unlocked.
5 Practical Ways to Identify Your God-Given Gifts

1. Prayer and Self-Reflection
Start by asking the Holy Spirit to reveal your gifts. Pray about it. Sit with the question. Reflect on what brings you joy when you serve and what feels life-giving versus draining. Often, your gift is hiding in what you naturally love doing.
2. Observe Where You’re Naturally Drawn
Pay attention to what catches your heart. Do you notice the kids running around at church and feel a pull to invest in them? Do you light up when you see hospitality happening well? What makes your heart beat faster usually points to where God has wired you.
3. Try Different Ministry Areas
You don’t have to figure it all out before you start. Sometimes the best way to discover your gift is to step in and try. Get involved in different areas. Help out where there’s a need. Experimentation is one of the fastest ways to find your fit.
4. Take a Spiritual Gifts Assessment
There are some great spiritual gifts assessments online that can help you reflect on how God may have wired you. These tools aren’t definitive answers, but they can give you a useful starting point for thinking and praying through.
5. Seek Feedback from Church Leaders and Friends
Often, other people see gifts in us before we see them in ourselves. Talk to a pastor or a trusted friend. Ask them what they see. Mature believers and church leaders can often confirm something the Holy Spirit has already been stirring in you.
Putting Your Gifts Into Action: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Start Small and Stay Consistent
Begin where you are, with what you have. You don’t need to go from zero to leading a ministry in one week. Consistency builds character and skill. If you have a gift of hospitality, start by joining the greeting team. Small, consistent steps are how lasting fruit grows.
Step 2: Seek Opportunities That Match Your Gifting
Here’s a quick guide to common gifts and where they often fit:
- Teaching – Sunday school, Bible studies, kids and youth ministry
- Mercy – Hospital visitation, care ministry, pastoral care support
- Administration – Event planning, church operations, finance
- Evangelism – Outreach programs, community events
- Worship – Music team, creative arts, production
- Service – Setup and teardown, practical help, hospitality
- Leadership – Small group coordination, team leadership
- Encouragement – Prayer ministry, newcomer connection
Step 3: Serve with the Right Attitude
How you serve matters as much as where you serve. Humility, not pride. Focus on others’ needs, not recognition. Let love be the motivation behind everything (1 Corinthians 13).
Step 4: Stay Submitted to Church Leadership
Gifts operate best when they’re under healthy spiritual authority. As a Pentecostal church, we believe structure and Spirit work together, not against each other. Stay teachable. Stay open to correction. Honour the leaders God has placed in your life.
Step 5: Keep Growing in Your Gifting
Your gift will develop over time. Seek training, find a mentor, take opportunities to grow. Keep yourself filled with the Spirit and keep showing up. Gifts grow when they’re used.
Breaking Through Barriers to Using Your Gifts
“I’m Too Busy”
Here’s the thing. Using your gifts actually energises you rather than draining you. When you’re operating in your sweet spot, serving doesn’t feel like a burden. Start with one small, manageable commitment and see what happens.
“I’m Not Qualified”
God equips those He calls. Willingness matters more than perfection. None of the people God used in the Bible felt qualified. They just said yes.
“I’ve Been Hurt by Church Before”
That pain is valid and worth acknowledging. Healing often comes through healthy community, even though it can take time to feel safe again. We take this seriously and want to be a church where people can serve in a safe, supportive environment.
“I Don’t Feel Spiritual Enough”
Gifts aren’t rewards for spiritual maturity. They’re tools God gives to help you grow. Everyone starts somewhere, and the only way to grow is to start.
